Summer has finally started and that means sundresses, swimsuits, beach reads, and more importantly sunscreen (SPF). Whether you're lounging by the pool, hitting the beach, or just enjoying the warm weather, protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays is essential to prevent skin damage like skin discolouration and an overall damaged skin barrier.
Did you know that prolonged and unprotected sun exposure can deepen acne scars and even worsen the appearance of pores? So, if you were looking for an easy, digestible and informative guide, you’re at the right place.

Starting with the Basics - What is SPF and why is it so important
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and it's a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect your skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays, specifically UVB rays that cause sunburn and hyperpigmentation.
Prevents Premature Ageing & Skin Discolouration
Being repeatedly exposed to sun rays without sun protection causes damage to your skin’s elastin and collagen, which over time can lead to premature signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, a leathery appearance and discoloration. These areas of discoloration usually called “sun spots” or “liver spots” are usually brown in colour and develop on the face, hands and even on the arms. Being diligent with your SPF application can help prevent this, helping you maintain a smoother and more even complexion.
Reduces the Risk of Sunburn & Inflammation
Have you wondered what SPF30 actually means? The number we usually see (e.g., SPF 30) indicates how much longer you can stay in the sun without getting burned compared to not wearing any sunscreen at all. If you typically burn after 10 minutes in the sun, an SPF 30 theoretically allows you to stay in the sun for 300 minutes without burning. With that being said, sunscreen plays an important role in reducing painful redness and inflammation. Whether you have sensitive skin or acne prone skin, wearing sunscreen should definitely be a non-negotiable to prevent worsening the appearance of pores and further irritating the skin which could lead to more acne flare ups, especially if you have psoriasis and rosacea.
Prevents Risk of Skin Cancer
All dermatological professionals will emphasise the importance of sunscreen to significantly lower the risk of skin cancer, because SPF protects the skin by blocking ultraviolet (UV) radiation from being absorbed by the skin. It is UV radiation that strongly damages skin cells damaging our DNA structure leading to cancer.

Common Myths About Sunscreen
We all have seen the increasing awareness of the importance of skincare and specifically SPF in recent years, yet there are still some misconceptions that need to be debunked.
Myth 1 : People with Deeper Skin Tones Don’t Need Sunscreen
People of all skin tones need sunscreen. While deeper skin tones have more melanin and offer some protection against UV rays, it’s not enough to prevent skin damage or skin cancer.
Myth 2 : You Don’t Need Sunscreen on Cloudy Days
Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds. It is such an important and beneficial practice to always wear your sunscreen, regardless of weather.
Myth 3 : Sunscreen Blocks Vitamin D Production
While sunscreen can reduce vitamin D production, you don't need to rely on sun exposure to ameet your vitamin D needs. A balanced diet and supplements can help maintain healthy levels.
Myth 4 : Sunscreen makes acne worse and is pore clogging
Totally get your concerns with sunscreen and the fear of it causing more acne because of clogged pores. Again, if you are very acne prone, be sure to find a lightweight sunscreen, especially one that states that it is “non-comedogenic”. However, keep in mind that non comedogenic isn't always guaranteed, even if labelled. It truly depends on how your skin reacts to a product, because every single person’s skin is different and therefore reacts differently.
Making sure your removal of sunscreen is super important too. Make sure that you are properly cleaning your skin so that you are not going to bed with any build up/residue from the day’s activities.

Understanding the Types of UV Rays
UVA Rays |
UVB Rays |
These rays penetrate deep into the skin and are primarily responsible for premature ageing and wrinkles. They can pass through windows and clouds, making them a year-round concern. |
These rays are responsible for sunburn and are most intense between 10 AM and 4 PM. UVB rays are the primary cause of skin cancer. |
Chemical vs Physical sunscreen - is there a difference?
Ingredients
Physical SPF
Contain active mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
Chemical SPF
Contain organic (carbon-based) compounds such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate.
Mechanism of Action
Physical SPF
Reflect and Scatter UV Rays : Physical sunscreens sit on top of the skin and create a barrier that reflects and scatters UV rays away from the skin.
Chemical SPF
Absorb UV Rays : Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin.
Advantages
Physical SPF
Immediate Protection : Work immediately upon application, so there's no need to wait before going outside.
Less Irritating : Often recommended for sensitive skin since they are less likely to cause irritation.
Stable in Sunlight : Less likely to break down in sunlight compared to some chemical filters.
Chemical SPF
Cosmetically Elegant : Formulations tend to be lighter and more easily absorbed into the skin, making them more suitable for daily use and under makeup.
No White Cast : Do not leave a white residue, which is beneficial for people with darker skin tones.
Disadvantages
Physical SPF
White Cast : Usually can leave a white or chalky residue on the skin, especially on darker skin tones.
Thicker Texture : May feel heavier or greasy on the skin, making them less appealing for everyday use.
Chemical SPF
Absorption Time : Require about 15-30 minutes to be effective after application.
Potential Irritants : Some chemical filters can cause irritation or allergic reactions, especially in sensitive skin.
Stability Issues : Certain chemical ingredients can degrade when exposed to sunlight, reducing their effectiveness. Formulations often include stabilisers to counteract this.
Choosing the Right SPF
Keeping it simple, the choice between physical and chemical sunscreen really depends on your skin type, preferences, and specific need/concerns :
Sensitive or Acne-Prone Skin:
For those of you who have sensitive or acne prone skin, you might feel more comfortable using physical sunscreens because they are much less likely to cause irritation.
Cosmetic Preferences:
Chemical sunscreens are often preferred for daily use because they have a lightweight texture and don’t leave a white cast.
Outdoor Activities:
If you’re an active person and plan to do a lot of outdoor activities this summer (especially water related activities) be sure to choose a water resistant formula in either physical or chemical sunscreens to ensure that you are nice and protected even through sweating/swimming.
At the end of the day, just wear whatever SPF that works and feels best for you. The best sunscreen is the one that you don't mind wearing everyday.
Pro tip - Be mindful to look for a sunscreen that has Broad-Spectrum Protection which means that your sunscreen will shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 , which blocks 97% of UVB rays. Higher SPFs offer slightly more protection but remember that no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays.
Sunscreen Formulations & Recs
SPF Lotions/Creams
SPF Lotions are ideal for dry skin and are easy to spread over large areas.
These can tend to be slightly thicker and moisturising. Cream formulations are great for the face and dry area
SPF Sprays
A great option for convenient quick application, especially on hard-to-reach areas, but make sure you apply enough for adequate protection. I definitely recommend staying away from the aerosol type of SPF sprays, as they have a risk of being carcinogenic.
SPF Sticks
Great for targeted areas like the nose and ears, and less likely to run into your eyes. Plus its having a solid form of SPF is super convenient for travelling and just being on-the-go.
Wear your SPF like a skincare pro
Proper application is key to effective sun protection, so regardless of which type of SPF you choose, here are the three main things you should practise to keep your skin protected and happy.
Apply Generously:
Most people don't use enough sunscreen. Aim for a shot glass (about one ounce) to cover your entire body. For your face, use about a nickel-sized amount or the three finger method where you squeeze a nice thick line of SPF on three fingers.
Apply Early:
Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside to allow it to absorb into your skin. Allowing your sunscreen to fully absorb first also helps with your makeup application too.
Reapply Often:
Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if you're swimming or sweating.
Additional Sun Protection Tips
While sunscreen is a crucial component of sun protection, there are many other things that you can implement in your day-to-day.
Wear Protective Clothing:
Wearing lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants and wide-brimmed UV hat/visor are great practice to protect your skin all over. As much as we focus on our face, it's important to not neglect the skin everywhere else.
Seek Shade:
Stay in the shade during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM).
Wear Sunglasses and find SPF in other products:
Protect your eyes from UV damage by wearing sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection. Nowadays, you can find so many different products with SPF in it. I started to implement SPF in other parts of my makeup/skincare routine.
My favourite addition has been making sure that my lip balm has SPF too because even your lips can get sun spots and shrivel due to sun damage.
