Beda Book Club - an Online Reading Community Dedicated to Books and the Beda Girls Who Love Them

Hi everyone, it’s Rachel & Alia. We’re so excited for our hot girl summer with the launch of Beda Book Club.

BBC is an online reading community dedicated to books and the Beda girls who love them. We choose a new book to read at the beginning of every other month and host an online trivia quiz with prizes for our online community.

All you have to do to be a member is to pick up a book, subscribe to Beda and join in!

The Origin of Beda Book Club

We all know the feeling of getting lost in a great book – it’s one of the best ways to relax and recharge. With everything going on in our busy lives, the default is to netflix and chill but that just adds up to our screen time. Reading is one of our favourite ways to “digitally detox”, not only is it entertaining, it keeps our mind stimulated with important and interesting topics.

Using our imagination while reading exercises our creative mind, instead of dulling it with over-produced TV shows. (No hate here, we still love a rom-com).

Our book club is really just for our Beda girls to come together: imagine cozying up to a good book and then joining friends for a lively trivia night online with prizes to take home.

Rachel's Top Books

Book "Maybe You Should Talk to Someone" by therapist Lori Gottlieb, Stack of Books "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanthi and "The Lost City of Z" by David Grann and "The Seabird

Some of my favourite books that I don't mind revisiting are "Maybe You Should Talk to Someone" by therapist Lori Gottlieb, "Educated" by Tara Westover and anything by Malcom Gladwell. All of which are really easy reads. Some "fun" popular fiction are "The Silent Patient" by Alex Michaelides, "It Ends with Us" by Colleen Hoover. The latter of which Blake Lively is starring in a movie releasing this year. My most recent fiction was "Free Food for Millionaires" by Min Jin Lee (author of Pachinko), cried within the first couple of chapters. This book was actually lent to me by a Beda girl and I need to return it to her (Hold on, Natassia!)

Another autobiography I'm currently reading is "Hanging by a Thread" by Erin Deering (founder of the viral swimwear brand Triangl). And if you're in the mood for something really niche, "The Seabird's Cry" by Adam Nicholson. If you like National Geographic documentaries, then you'll enjoy this masterpiece on the lives of puffins and other seabirds. Finally, the last "serious" historical non-fiction I read was "The Lost City of Z" by David Grann, a rather excellent "adventure" book. Doesn't hurt that Charlie Hunnam starred in the 2016 film version. I'm not encouraging you to watch but his lovely British accent might inspire you to read the book after too.

Alia's Top Books

Open book "A thousand splendid suns" by Khalid Hosseini reading outdoors, (middle) red book stack, (right) "A Little Life" Hanya Yanagihara

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khalid Hosseini has been my number 1 book for the past 8 years. You know those books that make you feel an actual change in the way you see and feel things? That was this book for me, I'll never forget the first time I finished reading this book.

Khalid Hosseini is also the author of the infamous "The Kite Runner". I can't recommend his books enough. His writing style and story telling are absolutely transformative, and the topics and themes discussed in his books are so important.

Another favourite of mine that I had recently read is "A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara. A very popular book but a very hard read, so definitely read through the trigger warnings before picking up the book yourself. Not only was this book beautifully written, but the characters feel so real and will stick with you forever.

My favourite genre of books tend to lean towards historical fiction but I realised that the main characteristic of books that I love is actually bildungsroman - a literary concept that focuses on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist as they navigate through life.

Some lighter/shorter reads that have become my favourites include "White Nights" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, "Norwegian Wood" by Haruki Murakami and "Circe" by Madeline Miller. As a big fan of the Percy Jackson series growing up, "Circe" was such a good re-telling of the mythology to read as a young adult.

The Fun Twist: Trivia Quiz Nights

To make our book club even more exciting, we’re bringing in bi - monthly trivia quiz nights.

We highly recommend you get together with a few girlfriends at home and do the quiz together with drinks, pyjamas and cute snacks.

P.S Have you heard?

Daisy Edgar Jones & Paul Mescal from the hit series have been teasing the internet all week about a possible Normal People reunion. There are even talks of the possibility of Season 2.

If you weren't in the mood to re-read the book, you might just be ready for a re-watch of the series on Hulu (just don't tell us). The chemistry between Marianne and Connell on screen translated so heartbreakingly well, it's more than worth a re-watch.

You have one whole week! Go go go.
